Self-Management Handbook

A Self-Management Handbook for Patients & Families with IBD

LIVING WELL WITH INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: A SELF-MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK FOR PATIENTS AND FAMILIES WITH IBD | This Handbook delivers critical information for patients and families dealing with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.  It is unique in that it offers not only general information about IBD, but more importantly it provides tools and information to help patients take better care of themselves, and to interact more effectively with their health care team.

The Handbook was carefully crafted by experts in pediatric IBD at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio) and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati, Ohio), and includes practical tips and suggestions from parents and kids who are living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The Handbook has been independently reviewed and endorsed by clinicians in the ImproveCareNow network, as well as the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).

Comments from people reviewing the Handbook include:

“Very well written, easy to read, loaded with good info and resources.”

“The Handbook is comprehensive and extensive.”

“It is highly educational and it provides a means that parents and their children can use to learn about IBD.”

Others described the Handbook as: “excellent”, “terrific”, and a “great resource.”

The Handbook provides detailed information about living with Crohn’s and colitis, treatment options, possible complications and much more.  It is designed to be a long-term guide, and it does not need to be read or completed all at once.  You should refer to it between visits to your doctor, and take it with you to the clinic to discuss what you have learned and done with your health care team.

Most sections in The Handbook are very quick and easy to complete.  Certain sections like the Food Journal and Growth Log may be used frequently - while other sections like Surgery may not apply to you. We recommend that you eventually work through the entire Handbook, but you should do so at your own pace.

We know that when patients and their families become actively involved in their own care, and work in cooperation with their health care team, the results can be incredibly positive.  This Handbook can help you do just that.
